The following information is fragmentary and has not been completely verified.  It is based, in part, on hearsay and is intended for early information use rather than being a formal investigative report.

On June 18, 2021, just after 8:00 a.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to the 1500 block of Eolus Avenue in the city of Encinitas for a suspicious person in a vacant lot. Two deputies contacted the man. During the contact, the man produced a handgun resulting in two deputies discharging their firearms striking the man.

The deputies immediately provided lifesaving efforts to the man until relieved by fire personnel. The man was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

No deputies were injured.

The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the investigation. The circumstances of the shooting are currently under investigation.

The Medical Examiner's Office has scheduled the autopsy for June 19, 2021. The man will be positively identified at autopsy.

A handgun was located at the scene where the man was shot.
