San Diego Offers Contact-Free Pickup At​ 11 Public Libraries

Pickup will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. starting Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Starting Tuesday, San Diego's public libraries are working to beat shelter-in-place boredom by opening up 11 library locations for contact-free pickup.

In a release, San Diego Public Library said by reopening its doors for contact-free pickup, it will again allow area residents access to 2.9 million physical items for the first time since mid-march.

“We’re flattening the curve, and as San Diegans continue to do the right thing we will expand andrestore neighborhood services in a safe and responsible way,” Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer said in a. “We know San Diegans love and miss their libraries, so we’re excited to offer contact-free pickup to provide access to millions of books and other materials while implementing safeguards to protect employees and patrons.”

Contact-free pickup services will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday. The following libraries are participating: Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission HillsHillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X.

Library patrons must present a valid library card or library card number when picking up an order. The library buildings remain closed to the public, and returns are not accepted at this time.

“The pickup service is an important first step in the Library’s return to full service,” Library Director Misty Jones said in a statement. “While our libraries have been physically closed, patrons have been using our online resources in record numbers. However, we’ve heard from many people who prefer physical books and this pickup service allows them to access some of the resources they’ve been missing.”
