Torrey Pines Grad Confirmed Dead in France Attack

The 20-year-old UC Berkeley student from Del Mar had been reported missing following the terrorist attack in Nice, France.

San Diego, CA — A Torrey Pines High School graduate reported missing after a terrorist attack in Nice, France Thursday has been confirmed dead, according to University of California at Berkeley.

Nicolas "Nick" Leslie, 20, a UC Berkeley student from Del Mar, had not been heard from since a terrorist drove a large truck through a crowd gathered to watch fireworks on Bastille Day, France's Independence Day.

Leslie, an environmental sciences major, was one 85 UC Berkeley students studying abroad in Nice, attending a 15-day program called Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe.

A friend told Leslie's family they saw him running away after the attack. But concern about his whereabouts grew when he did not return to student housing that night and did not contact his family.

French officials notified the FBI Sunday that Leslie was among 84 people killed in the attack. The FBI then notified UC Berkeley.

“This is tragic, devastating news,” UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said. “All of us in the UC Berkeley family — both here on campus, and around the world — are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. I join Nick’s parents, friends and the entire campus community in condemning this horrific attack, and in mourning the loss of one of our own.”
