Two Pioneering UCSD Extension Programs Celebrate 35 Years
UC San Diego Extension Hosts 35th Annual Graduation Ceremony for EPSE & LAMP
University of California San Diego Extension will host its 35th Annual Graduation Ceremony for the 2018-2019 class of Executive Perspective for Scientists & Engineers (EPSE) and Leadership and Management Program (LAMP). The ceremony will honor 60 program graduates in the career-boosting programs and will take place at 5 p.m., May 22, 2019 at Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.
This year’s EPSE and LAMP graduates join more than 2,000 science and engineering professionals with advanced learning and comprehensive business skills. Local companies, including General Atomics, Illumina and BAE Systems, sponsor employees in EPSE and LAMP every year to further enhance their knowledge, adopt new skills and implement valuable new capabilities.
EPSE provides mid- to senior-level science and engineering professionals with several years of supervisory and operational experience with an Executive Perspective on business and management challenges facing today’s economy. EPSE’s nine-month program addresses the need for professional development and was designed with the rising population of scientists and engineers in mind.

In contrast to EPSE, LAMP’s five-month program is designed for entry to mid-level professionals taking on leadership and management roles. The course work aims to further enhance their skills and develop a comprehensive management skill set in individual and workgroup leadership, business management fundamentals and personal skill building.
“Through EPSE and LAMP, students gain the proper business education and skill set to help them advance to leadership positions, benefitting the individual, their employer and the regional economy,” said EPSE & LAMP Program Director Tom Dorosewicz. “Students appreciate being recognized and enrolled in our programs by their employer, and they become better equipped to contribute to their company’s success, resulting in a strong ROI for both students and sponsoring companies.

The 35th EPSE and LAMP Graduation Ceremony will feature keynote speaker Scott Byrnes, Northrop Grumman Director of Communication, Navigation and Identification Products. Byrnes is a 2012 graduate of the EPSE program and has been with Northrop Grumman for 25 years as part of a 34-year career in the defense industry. Byrnes is responsible for development of CNI solutions for F-35, F-22 and derivative products such as Freedom Radios.
“The EPSE program helped me grow into my career and become a better leader,” said Byrnes. “The course material provided me with skills that weren’t being instilled in day-to-day tasks, including finance, negotiations, presentation skills and business stimulation.”
The 35th Annual EPSE and LAMP Graduation Ceremony will kick off on May 22, 2019 at 5 p.m. with a reception and dinner party preceding the ceremony.
