"The affected area is near Blythe, Western Riverside is not affected," National Weather Service officials tell Patch. "Riverside County's size messes with the alert system."
The NWS says that the emergency alert system is designed via a county-by-county structureโ so if one small pocket of a large county like Riverside is affected by a dust storm, as it was in this case, the rest of us may be alerted by default.
