RIVERSIDE, CA โ€”Drivers in downtown Riverside should allow extra travel time or take alternate routes this week due to construction-related road closures, which include the full closure of eastbound 91 on Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC).

The construction is part of the Pachappa Underpass Project, and the street closures will allow RCTC crews to safely dismantle beams along the bridge floor and assemble a large crane.

According to RCTC, from 10 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday, there will be full closure of the eastbound 91 from Central Avenue to 14th Street. The eastbound 91 off-ramp to 14th street also will be closed from 7 p.m. to 11 a.m.

As an alternative, motorists may use the Central Avenue off-ramp, head north on Magnolia Avenue/Market Street and then to the 14th Street eastbound 91 on-ramp in order to re-enter the 91.

Nightly lane closures actually began on the 91 earlier this week, and from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday night, three lanes will be closed on westbound 91 from 14th Street to Central Avenue. Those lanes also will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. During those hours, the westbound 10th Street on-ramp also will be closed.

RCTC suggests that drivers use the 14th Street on-ramp as a detour.

According to RCTC, work began on the Pachappa Underpass Project in April of 2020, and it is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021. The project involves removing a portion of the overhead railroad bridge and building a large retaining well.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors, and RCTC reminds motorists that the speed limit in the construction zone is 55 mph.
