Temecula Valley Woman Scores Coveted 'Bacon Intern' Gig

The school teacher beat out 300 pork fans, who applied for the $1K, one-day job to sample and review Farmer Boys' bacon-related menu.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA โ€” Farmer Boys has named its "perfect piggy" Bacon Intern: Moreno Valley's Rancho Verde High School teacher and admitted bacon-addict, Mona Godfrey, a resident from the Murrieta-Temecula area.

The 300 or so die-hard bacon fans, who valiantly tossed their pork-loving personas in the ring to win the one-day job โ€” that pays $1,000 โ€” at Farmer Boys, may be crying salty tears today, as they were not selected for the pig-out gig.

Godfreyโ€™s video, submitted to the eatery's online contest, not only nailed her love for bacon, as she stood in a bacon costume surrounded by bacon paraphernalia with a bacon-theme song, was filmed and edited by one of her students.

โ€œMy best friend told me about this contest, as well as my peeps on Facebook, and even my psychic told me - seriously," Godfrey said. "You know you have a real bacon addiction when your friends tag you in any post related to meat."

As Farmer Boys' first-ever Bacon Intern, Godfrey will show up in September at a Perris location and will be tasked with eating such Farmer Boys' bacon-topped items as the Bacon Boy Cheeseburger, Farmer's Burger and Farmer's Chopped Cobb Salad, as well as rating each strip of bacon for flavor and thickness and sampling some menu items in development - a one-day assignment that will pay her $1,000.

Riverside-based Farmer Boys, with 92 fast-casual restaurants in California and Nevada, launched earlier this month its nationwide search for a porker-obsessed intern with approximately 300 candidates applying online with videos and photos through Instagram.

And the competition was stiff, as entries poured in with contestants vying for the position.

Contestants were hungry for the job, so to speak, with such serious applicants as those sporting bacon tattoos, bacon ties, bacon license plates, or flaunting bacon-filled cocktails and the very sweet, "pick my mom or dad"-imploring, bacon-loving kids and dogs. See all the entries here.

"Iโ€™m pretty sure a butcher was my first babysitter, and I teethed on bacon strips and jerky, plus I can spend hours talking about all things meat and even pitched starting a meat class to one of the Assistant Principals last year," Godfrey said. "I know Farmer Boys made the right choice in choosing me to be their Bacon Intern!โ€

โ€œMona Godfrey has bacon fever and Farmer Boys has the cure,โ€ said Farmer Boys vice president Larry Rusinko. โ€œWe were pleased with the amount of creativity shown in many of the pork-tacular Bacon Intern submissions, but we felt that Godfrey went above and beyond to show us just how much bacon means to her.โ€
