IRVINE, CA — A 23-year-old man was behind bars Friday after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an elderly man.

Keven Quiroz was arrested Thursday morning in his Tustin apartment and booked into Orange County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse, Irvine police said in a news release.

The victim, a 69-year-old man, was walking his dog near Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine on March 19 when he was assaulted. Police said photographs, surveillance footage and several tips from residents led to Quiroz’s arrest.

Authorities said they believe the assault was related to a dispute between the suspect and victim over a dog being allowed off leash in public.

An unloaded gun was found in Quiroz’s car during his arrest, but it was not used in the assault, police said. If investigators determine Quiroz was not in legal possession of the gun found in his car, he will also face weapons charges.
