Head's Up Thru Dec. 29: Worthwhile Events This Week

A look at local activities and opportunities that could be of interest to Lake Forest-area residents.

A look at what's going down and coming up for Lake Forest and residents of the surrounding area. 

• Today begins the first week of Holiday Hoopla Winter Camp. It may sound like a basketball tournament but instead there is neat stuff to do and think about. It's Dec. 23, 26 and 27. Click here for cost and details. 

• Holiday Horse Camp begins today. Learn to ride and care for a horse, and also play games with them. Click here for details. Other dates for the one day camp are Dec. 26, 27, 30 and Jan. 2, 3.

• Interested in running faster? Holiday speed clinics are today and next Monday, Dec. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. Check the details to see if it's for you. 

• Tuesday is the last day for Christmas shopping, and many national chains plan to stay open late on Christmas Eve. Toys R Us stores will be open round-the-clock until 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and most Walmart stores will be open until 8 p.m.

• The City is offering four two-day mini-camps over the holiday at Etnies Skate Park, beginning today. Click here for details and continue to check the Patch Events Calendar.  Session 2 begins Thursday. 

• If you’re planning to be on the freeways during the holiday, be careful. The CHP plans maximum enforcement from 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve to midnight on Christmas Day. Officers will be on heightened alert for drivers who speed, fail to buckle-up, or are driving under the influence.

• Thursday is the first day of the week-long Kwanzaa celebration, which honors African heritage in African-American culture. It was established in 1966 by activist and scholar Maulana Karenga, who is currently chair of the Africana Studies department at Cal State University Long Beach.

• Looking for some music heading into the weekend? The Tubes ($25) perform Friday at The Coach House.
