Faces Under the Flyover: County Flocks to North Island Naval Air Station
Tens of thousands from around the country braved bumper-to-bumper traffic and long walks from parking lots to view dozens of aircraft in the air and on the ground.
Part air show, fairground midway and military reunion, Saturday's centennial of naval aviation brought tens of thousands from around the county—and many states of America—to North Island. Traffic across the San Diego-Coronado Bridge crawled for hours and many saw the start of the Parade of Flight from the crest of the span. Those who got there earlier faced long walks on concrete to the display of dozens of aircraft over many decades. They also stood in long lines for lemonade and beer, toys and George H.W. Bush-signed flight jackets. Even Hooters had a booth—with a mascot owl and the busty waiters posing for photos. But the weather was perfect and the flight displays awe-inspiring.
