Former Sharp Grossmont Volunteer Honored as Coast Guardsman of Year
Chase Severns was praised for his dedication to volunteering and his work ethic.

The Navy Times has named its Coast Guardsman of the Year, a former local who logged time volunteering at a Sharp Grossmont Hospital senior center.
Chase Severns, 31, a boatswain's mate 1st class, was stationed aboard the USCGC Haddock before moving this month to become an executive petty officer in Kennewick, WA.Â
In addition to his work at Grossmont, the new father has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Logan Elementary School in San Diego with charity runs.
Severns also is credited with finding a way to recover 800 pounds of drugs that were floating away after suspects dumped them in the sea and developing a learning program to help other guardsmen advance.
