Highway 24 Crash Victim ID'd

The man died Monday morning after crashing in Orinda late Sunday night.

LAMORINDA, CA — A man who died in a solo-car crash late Sunday night on westbound state Highway 24 in Orinda has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as 22-year-old Pittsburg resident Bobby Jones.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at 11:46 p.m. to a report of the crash on westbound Highway 24 just west of St. Stephens Drive and arrived to find the vehicle overturned with the driver ejected.

The driver, later identified as Jones, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.

Investigators determined Jones was driving a Kia Spectra sedan and for some reason veered to the right and off the roadway, then struck an electrical box and chain link fence, CHP officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP's Contra Costa-area office at (925) 646-4980.
