LAMORINDA, CA — A puppy stolen from a Lafayette pet store was found Saturday morning wandering on a downtown San Francisco street, and one animal control official credits both a sheriff's deputy and the magic of social media for finding her.

"The picture of that dog has been all over Facebook; social media can be amazing," said Capt. Amy Corso of the San Francisco Animal Care and Control, which operates an animal shelter in the city.

A $2,500 reward was offered for the return of the female Chihuahua-mix puppy named Iris after it was taken between 3 and 4 p.m. May 26 from the Pet Food Express in Lafayette.

A surveillance photo was released by the store of a woman suspected of taking the puppy. The woman is described as about 20 years old, with a tattoo on her right hand and a nose ring, according to a release from the store.

The puppy was taken to the San Francisco Animal Care and Control. Corso said she received a phone call about 10:30 a.m. Saturday from a San Francisco Sheriff's senior deputy who said he was at Leavenworth and McAllister Streets looking at a dog who looked very much like Iris. Corso
said the deputy made a few iPhone photos and emailed them to her.

"I've been staring at these pictures of Iris for days, and I was 98 percent sure this was the (same) dog," Corso said Saturday. The deputy gathered up the pup and took her to Corso.

It wasn't known how Iris ended up there, Corso said.

Representatives of Jelly's Place, an organization that offers puppies for adoption at the Lafayette store, went Saturday afternoon to pick up the puppy, according to store officials.
