Students Get Artsy, Ancient on Field Trip

Orinda Intermediate students learn blacksmithing and pottery the way people did 2,000 years ago in a visit to The Crucible in Oakland.

In the name of art, Orinda Intermediate School on a recent field trip got to roll up their sleeves in an ancient way.

In a visit to The Crucible industrial art facility in West Oakland, students got to hammer like a blacksmith, try on animal hide and play with clay in a field trip. It was hands-on in understanding how ancient cultures fashioned their art. The Crucible is a nonprofit collaboration of arts, industry and the Bay Area community.

Orinda Intermediate teacher Bobby Glasser, a member of the nonprofit group, brought his students to The Crucible. A Q&A with Glasser ran on The Crucible's website.
