Playgrounds, School Sites, & Surfers

Yes, you are reading that correctly. We’ll start with the surfer . . . over the weekend a Manhattan Beach surfer was issued a $1,000 citation for paddling out despite the signs and warnings from officials.

With that said, it is important for you to know that CMPA will issue citations to unauthorized people on our campuses. Our playgrounds and school sites are closed to the public. Some families and community members have been using our facilities and ignoring shelter-in-place/social distancing guidelines. Please help our police focus on other issues rather than LCMSD playgrounds. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for spreading the word.

Read Aloud for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Families

This morning I decided to record a read aloud of the book Elmer. I used this book to share how experienced readers have “old favorites” or books they like to go back to and read often. Additionally, at the end I encouraged students to think about what makes them unique/special and to draw a picture or write about it. This video is far from perfect as I tried to keep two things in mind: 1) “Now is better than perfect,” Lucy Calkins, author of Reading and Writing Workshop, and 2) “Film it in one take (like a live classroom),” Kristin Hancock, Cove Teacher. As you can imagine, it can be difficult to film yourself and share it with the world. Thanks for supporting our teachers as they embrace these new challenges in bringing lessons into your home. Here is the video if you’d like to share it with your K/1 student.
