San Marin High School Grad Killed by Train in Chico

A former student at San Marin High School in Novato was killed when he was struck by a freight train in Chico early Sunday morning.

Christian Lizarraga, 21, of Chico, was hit by the Union Pacific freight train at 5:40 a.m. Sunday at Sixth and Orange streets, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

He was pronounced dead at 5:45 a.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Taylor Hovey said.

The Chico Police Department is investigating the incident, Hovey said. The incident did not occur at a crossing, Union Pacific spokesman Francisco Castillo said.
