LOS ALAMITOS, CA — Orange County Chabad Jewish Centers have multiple community Seders planned for this week.
Thanks to the Chabad Jewish Center of Mission Viejo, here are 10 Passover facts and traditions that every Jew should know:
- Passover is the most widely celebrated Jewish holiday
- Giving to the less fortunate is the hallmark of Judaism and the Jewish people.
- Bread is forbidden on Passover -- and Jewish people are called to get rid of chametz--or anything produced from risen grain.
- If you do nothing else, eat your Matzah - on the first night of Passover.
- Read the Haggadah - this book is the most popular book in the history of Jewish texts. It tells of the story of Jewish ancestors being led from slavery in Egypt.
- Coffee is kosher for Passover, if it is certified as such by a Rabbinic agency.
- Red wine is the thing--as all at a Seder will imbibe in at least 4 cups of red wine (ideally). With hundreds of high quality kosher wines available, be sure and stock up!
- Nuts about Children at Passover--keep the kids engaged by giving them nuts, according to many Rabbis. Here are some other tips on planning a family friendly Seder.
- Four is a theme of the evening. Four cups of wine, signifying freedom from four exiles. Read more about what makes four a theme of Seders.
- Who is the fifth son? In 1957, a letter penned to Jews worldwide reminded all to invite a "fifth son" or one who would not otherwise be at the Seder or aware of Passover.
Are you feeling like a fifth son? Perhaps this year, find a Passover Seder to celebrate near you:
