LOS ALAMITOS, CA — A 2-year-old filly sustained a life-ending injury during a race at Los Alamitos Race Track last weekend, officials said Tuesday. Forgot The Rose was the 17th horse death related to injuries at the Cypress area race track in 2019, according to Horse Racing Wrongs website.

Sunday night's third 400-yard race for quarter horses proved devastating for the filly. After the injury, she was carted off the track and later euthanized, according to Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board. The issue of racehorse deaths has come under increasing scrutiny this year. Members of Horse Racing Wrongs, a New York-based group that advocates for a nationwide ban on the sport, have been a regular presence this year outside Los Alamitos and Santa Anita, where 34 horses have died since December.

Forgot the Rose had five starts in her career, two first-place finishes and$11,735 in career earnings, according to Equibase.com. She was ridden by Jockey Jonathan Roman, trained by Jesus Nunez, and owned by Eg High Desert Farms. Her breeder was Steve D. Burns, a doctor of Veterinary Medicine, according to the site.

No further information about the injury was released.

The death came just one day after Satchel Paige, a 3-year-old gelding, died after breaking his left front ankle in a race at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. Satchel Paige was the 34th horse death at that track since Dec. 26.
