Distance Learning Continues At Los Alamitos Schools Indefinitely

The Los Alamitos Unified School District has announced that distance learning will continue indefinitely.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA – The Los Alamitos Unified School District has announced that distance learning will continue indefinitely in an effort to stop the spread of the new coronavirus and in accordance with recommendations from the governor.

The school district made the announcement on Thursday, referencing comments from California Governor Gavin Newsom that although school building are closed instruction should continue in an effort to ensure students receive a good education through the end of the school year. As a result, all of the campuses in the district will be closed to students for the remainder of the school year.

District facilities, which include classrooms, fields, playground, tennis courts, basketball courts and gyms will remain closed as well.

"While we are devastated by this news, I am confident we will continue to unite to find ways to support and connect as a community to make the best of the remaining school year for our beloved students, families and colleagues," said Superintendent Andrew Pulver in the announcement.

Should conditions change, Pulver said, the district would bring students back, even for a short period of time.

There are a number of logistical issues to figure out, including grading practices, commencement ceremonies, college admissions, registration, summer school and summer camps. Pulver said information about those are forthcoming.

The meal distribution program will continue despite the closure, as will the distribution of Chromebooks for students who do not have access to an internet-connected device.
