How To Be Eco-Savvy This Halloween In Los Alamitos, Seal Beach

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — How will you carve your pumpkin this year? Will it be scary or silly? will you carve it early, so you end up with pumpkin soup by Nov. 1?

Trash services in Orange County are inviting residents to go green this Halloween by disposing of unwanted pumpkins in their green waste carts to be composted following this year’s Halloween festivities. Whether you are served by CR&R or Waste Management, the end result is the same. Put that pumpkin in the greens waste can for composting.

“Organic materials, like pumpkins and fallen leaves, are an excellent source of nutrient-rich essentials for plant growth.” said Eloisa Orozco, spokesperson for Waste Management of Southern California. “By disposing of your pumpkin to be composted via your green waste cart you’re ensuring that it will be put to beneficial re-use.”

Residents should remove any non-vegetative materials, such as candles, glow sticks and decorations and place them in their green waste cart, in order for their pumpkins to be composted properly.

Here are some additional tips to have an eco-friendly Halloween.

• Make your own costumes. Second hand stores and yard sales are great places to find pieces to create your Halloween ensemble. Have a costume you’re never going to use again? Get together with some friends and have a costume exchange party.
• Throw an eco-friendly party. Set out recycling containers for your guests to place empty bottles and cans. Opt for reusable cups and plates to serve your treats and remember to keep food and food-soiled items, like greasy pizza boxes, out of the recycling.
• Help keep neighborhoods clean while trick-or-treating. Carry an extra bag and pick up litter along the way. Remember to place candy wrappers in the trash not recycling.
