Orange County Blue Ribbon School Announced For 2018

This OC schools have been recognized by the Department of Education for achieving superior standards of academic excellence,

PLACENTIA, CA — A Placentia elementary school was named a National Blue Ribbon School for this year, the U.S. Department of Education announced Monday.

Golden Elementary School was one of a dozen California schools to win the honor. Other schools across the state that were selected as Blue Ribbon Schools included:

  • Argonaut Elementary School, Saratoga, Calif.
  • Carmel Valley Middle School, San Diego, Calif.
  • Joaquin Miller Middle School, San Jose, Calif.
  • John Gomes Elementary School, Fremont, Calif.
  • North Star Academy, Redwood City, Calif.
  • Redwood Middle School, Saratoga, Calif.
  • Riverside STEM Academy, Riverside, Calif.
  • Lawson Middle School, Cupertino, Calif.
  • San Diego Jewish Academy, San Diego, Calif.
  • Teach Elementary School, San Luis Obispo, Calif.
  • William Hopkins Junior High School, Fremont, Calif.

"I'm pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School," U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a message to the honorees. "We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives."

On the DOE website, the Golden Elementary School was described as a "community of scholars who strive to be respectful, responsible and safe every day."

The school serves approximately 850 students.

Over the past few years, Golden Elementary's educators have "prioritized literacy and math instruction for all students," according to the blue ribbon website.

DeVos will celebrate this year's winners in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 7 and 8.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program began in 1982, and since then, more than 8,800 schools have been honored.

There are 339 blue ribbon public schools in California, serving 237,472 students, according to the DOE.
