Rossmoor Crossing Guard Gets Top 10 Honor

Known for his vigilance and love of the kids, this Los Alamitos Unified School District Crossing Guard was voted one of the country's best.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA -Los Alamitos Unified School District crossing guard Tom Germscheid has more than his school kids safety on his mind. Over 61,000 votes have rated him one of the top 10 crossing guards in the United States.

"Germscheid has guarded the safety of the Rossmoor knights at the crazy-busy intersection of Montecito and Shakespeare twice a day for four years," the Los Alamitos Unified School District says.

His grateful community voted him into the Top 10 Crossing Guards in the USA! The voting began in November 2018, according to Rossmoor Elementary School. Before Rossmoor, Germscheid served in the US Army and dedicated 27 years to the medical profession.

Upon retirement, he longed to give back to the community that "has been so good to his family," he said. Protecting its children is the most responsible and rewarding position that he could hope to hold, Germscheid said.

According to the school, he lives minutes away from his job and enjoys his healthy, active lifestyle. Most importantly, he loves the kids.

His first day on the job, Germscheid was assigned another location but was moved to our busier crosswalk because he is "someone who can think on his feet," the district said.

He greets hundreds of people by name daily, they wrote on his entry form.

One parent said of Germscheid, "I only occasionally walk my kids to school and was amazed by how quickly Tom knew us; he knew my daughter years before she even started Kindergarten," she said.

Germscheid’s impact on our students was apparent in this year’s PTA Reflections competition.

When asked to discuss the topic “Heroes Around Me,” one of the Rossmoor students photographed “Mr. Tom” as his art entry.

It is clear. Rossmoor Elementary and Los Alamitos Unified School District all love Mr. Germscheid!
Take a minute to meet Tom Germscheid. Also, if you think about it, thank a crossing guard for keeping you and your loved ones safe at school, every day.
