Woman Found Dead in Backyard Pool

Seal Beach victim, in her 50s, was found by her husband early Wednesday when he discovered she wasn't in bed.

A woman in her 50s found in a backyard pool by her husband in Seal Beach early Wednesday was pronounced dead at the scene, a fire captain said.

The woman, whose name was not immediately available, was pulled from the pool by her husband, who called 911 at 3:20 a.m., Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

Firefighters tried to revive her but pronounced her dead at the scene in the 4200 block of Fir Avenue, Concialdi said.

The woman would “routinely” go to the backyard to smoke a cigarette, Concialdi said. When her husband woke up and saw she wasn’t in bed he went looking for her, Concialdi said.

“The husband was very distraught,” Concialdi said.

Firefighters recommend “isolation fences” around pools and spas because even adults can accidentally fall into the water and drown, Concialdi said.

There have been 110 emergency calls to report drownings or near- drownings in Orange County this year, Concialdi said. Among the 41 fatalities, 20 of them involved people 50 or older.
