Bay to Breakers: Three Los Altos Runners in Top 15

Click on the links to see our local top runners cross the finish line. Mikko Valimaki was first in his division and placed second in the overall men's category, Bob Anderson and Ben Lipshuetz were third and seventh in their divisions, respectively.

 

Among the too-many great things going on last weekend was the annual Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco.

The 101-year-old race, which is known for its abundance of clever costumes and embrace of all-comers, nonetheless has a serious side.

Los Altos runners clocked in in the top 15 who placed in their divisions. Another five local runners placed in the top 150. We have no doubt we might have had more, had there not been so many fantastic things to do close to home.

Among all non-elite category men, Mikko Valimaki (00:41:19) placed second, just behind John McGuire of Palo Alto (00:40:59).

For comparison, the top 15 elite runners ran times ranging from Sammy Kitwara’s 00:34:41 (pace: 00:34:31), to Peter Gilmore’s 00:42:30 (pace: 00:05:42).

Placing in the top 150 were:

  • Peter Thornycroft, of Los Altos, ranked 26 in the male 50-59 division, with a time of 00:52:51 and a pace of 07:06.
  • Dino Piscione, of Los Altos Hills, ranked 57 in the male 40-49 division, with a time of 00:50:33 and a pace of 06:47
  • Thomas Rasmussen, of Los Altos, ranked 61 in the male 13-19 division, with a time of 00:58:43 and a pace of 07:53.
  • Susan Kelso, of Los Altos, ranked 134 in the female 60-69 division, with a time of  01:44:50, and a pace of 14:04.
  • Katherine Mellis, of Los Altos, ranked 69 in the female 20-29 division, with a time of 01:00:48 and a pace of 08:10.
