Crashes, Flooding On I-280, SR-85 Make Commute Tough On Peninsula

Storms accompany several incidents, including one I-280 crash on the Peninsula with a vehicle turned sideways and stuck in the mud.

LOS ALTOS, CA -- Driving in the South Bay was certainly eventful throughout Monday.

To the far north, the latest during the commute crush was a crash on Interstate 280 southbound north of Farm Hill Boulevard in Woodside that was blocking lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. Due south, residual delays were found on the highway at the State Route 84 connection. The problem areas have since cleared up.

In turn, southbound State Route 17 had its troubles near the connection with I-280 north of Campbell per CHP, but it has also has since cleared.

CHP also reported flooding on the southbound side of I-280 north of the Foothill Expressway in Los Altos that lasted through the evening. Motorists experienced delays there, along with an area south of there on the northbound side south of N. Wolfe Road in Cupertino. Lanes that were once blocked are free and clear -- in addition to an obstruction reported on the southbound side north of S. Winchester Boulevard in San Jose.

Traveling on I-280 started with issues early. The highway in both directions had the CHP responding to two traffic hazards in that same area. A crash on the northbound side was called in citing a vehicle turned sideways and stuck in the mud, blocking the center divider south of Magdalena. That incident has been cleared.

Also earlier in the day, a crash with injuries involving an overturned vehicle on State Route 85 added to the Monday traffic foray. The flipped vehicle blocked the right shoulder of the northbound side at the turnoff to State Route 237 near Mountain View but has since cleared.

Residual delays were dotting the traffic incident map most of the day, including one on the southbound side of highway 85 where it connects with I-280 in Sunnyvale.

Rainy, windy conditions had accompanied a number of incidents across the South Bay through the weekend and into the Monday commutes.

Adding to the highway headaches, the CHP also reported flooding in the southbound lanes on the El Monte Road onramp in the Los Altos Hills in the morning. Crews handled that mess.

Farther north, an obstruction has also cleared since blocking the southbound side of U.S. Highway 101 north of Willow Road between Menlo Park and Palo Alto.
