Los Altos DAR promotes 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

The Los Altos Chapter continues to commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which secured for women the right to vote. The woman suffrage movement officially began in 1848 with the first women’s right convention in Seneca Falls, New York. The campaign involved marches, petitions, and even picketing the White House and lasted over 72 years before Congress passed the constitutional amendment granting women in the United State the right to vote.

The anniversary of this milestone is an appropriate time to reflect on the remarkable accomplishments of women in every facet of American life. It is also an opportunity to honor women for their leadership in service to their families, their communities, and the Nation.

The Los Altos Chapter asked the City of Los Altos and the Town of Los Altos Hills to issue a proclamation for Women’s’ Equality Day. The City of Los Altos the the Town of Los Altos Hills issued the proclamation on August 26, 2020.

The Los Altos Chapter DAR celebrates the passion and unwavering dedication of the women who struggled and persevered in the fight for suffrage, and we recognize the countless ways that women strengthen the fabric of the Nation. We honor our past DAR members and suffragists: Frances Willard, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Stokes Paul, Mary Garrett Hay, Julia Ward Howe, Belva Lockwood, Harriet Taylor Upton, and Sue Shelton White.
