New Safeway at San Antonio Shopping Center Is Hiring

The Safeway will open on April 19, 2013. At that time, expect to see the Safeway in downtown Los Altos close to undergo its approved renovation.

The opening of Safeway, the first store at the highly anticipated new residential and commercial project at San Antonio Road and El Camino Real, means the project is one step closer to completion.

According to The Village at San Antonio Center email newsletter, the Safeway, which will relocate from California Street to 645 San Antonio Rd., opens its doors on April 19th "with lots of special activities."

But first, the store needs to hire its staff and Safeway has partnered with the Mountain View-Los Altos Adult Education School to get the word out.

On Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Thursday, Feb. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m., Safeway representatives will conduct on-site interviews for full-time and part-time employment at the new store, and at others in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

Candidates must apply online prior to Feb. 27 at www.safeway.com/careers.

Positions are available in many different areas of the supermarket including: deli clerks, produce clerks, starbucks clerks, meat/seafood clerks, courtesy clerks, food clerks, office clerks, bakery clerks, cake decorators, bakers, sushi clerks and floral clerks.

Once the Safeway is open at the Village, it will allow the company to begin work on an all-new downtown Los Altos Safeway, which received approval last year to virtually double in size. John Carrozella, the Northern California real estate manager for Safeway told the Los Altos City Council in January that it intended to close the store as soon as the new Safeway at the Village at San Antonio came on line (at that time projected for March 15). Carrozzella had come before the council Jan. 22 to ask for a exception to the code to allow an exposed-truss ceiling and skylights.

There isn't word yet about when the hiring will begin for the other restaurants and retailers at the site—The Counter Custom-Built Burgers, Starbucks, Fidelity Investments and BlueWhite Cleaners. Another restaurant, TavernaBlu has since dropped out, according to a project spokesperson.
