One grandmother gave each of her children and grandchildren a Christmas card which said she would take them on a dream holiday, and when she reviewed what was No.1 on their Bucket List, she would make a decision on which destination everyone would be taken to. They loved the idea. She said she wanted to go on a trip with them while she was in good health, and was glad to spend the money now, rather than have them inherit it. We coordinated bringing 20 members from all over the globe, to meet up at the destination.

Another grandmother asks each grandchild what is on their Bucket List, and as a graduation present, that’s where she takes them.

Here are some ideas which we have done for multi-generational clients.

This can be a very personalized holiday, with just the family and private guides.

People are divided if necessary, into ages so that everyone gets to do the things they want to do. Small children can be put in the hands of a nanny, while the others do activities for the ones seeking adventure, or just a relaxing walk. All ages are taken care of, which is nice having private guides. The destination of course depends on the budget

One of the best reasons to book a guided holiday is knowing that you can explore some of the world’s most adventurous locales without any worries about getting lost or sacrificing modern comforts. You can visit iconic historic landmarks, such as Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Jackson Hole. Stay on a ranch, learn about American history, and float down the Snake River. Families love the wild west, cowboys and buffalo experience. Very reasonable prices,

One grandmother bought a pair of cowboy boots for every member of the family in readiness for their trip, along with a Stetson so they all looked the part. The children were just delighted with the gifts.

Costa Rica

If you have a family of adventure seekers, take a guided holiday to Costa Rica. Lots to do like zip-lining, river boating to snorkeling and visiting coconut and banana plantations. This trip let’s you get up close to turtles, frogs, butterflies, and barking howler monkeys in the rainforest.

Peru

Taking a family international journey is a different experience. A sojourn to South America takes on the vibrant culture of Peru with a focus on the mysterious and the spiritual. You will benefit from a personalized sightseeing tour of Lima, the incredible Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and a visit to the Sacred Valley. Fantastic mountain biking, horseback riding, and zip line adventures including a visit to a Peruvian family home.

Some other popular destinations are the Galapagos islands, Alaska cruise and train trip,

Or to go to the country where your ancestors came from as a family research experience.

One family went to Italy to where their great grandfather came from, and they all learned to make pizza and all had to learn a few Italian words before they left.

A safari in Africa is always on the list. This is now a much faster journey with going thru Dubai. It’s quite popular to put the grandparents in business class and the rest of the family in economy. If the family like sailing, then chartering a super yacht in the Mediterranean, a wonderful experience.

If you want to stay in the U.S. go see the National Treasures, Philadelphia to Washington D.C. dinner in a colonial tavern, chatting with a Founding Father, making real the places where the U.S.A was born and learning what makes this country so unique. George Washington’s family home, stories of African Americans who served in the Civil War, Amish teenagers confronted by choice, Gettysburg battlefields and Washington D.C, from mall monuments to an Archives treasure hunt and kayaking on the Potomac River.

One family had 60% of the votes for England, so we planned on taking them to an English football match to see Liverpool play Chelsea, take the Beatles tour of Merseyside, and the highlights such as the Tower of London, changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, museums, and a Thames River Cruise. I gave them a list of British expressions so they were prepared for the different language such as Peckish, which means I am hungry, the Loo, which is the toilet, and brolly, an umbrella.

Planning is half the fun. Giving packing lessons to everyone, one bag each, a lecture on where you are going, reading projects so they are prepared, and any language and cultural tips. Pocket money in the correct currency was a great education also.

A new item on the list is a river cruise on the Danube, 8 days thru several different countries . This was voted one of the best trips for a multi-generational family.

Perhaps the experience of a lifetime but a memory that will stand out in the passage of time.
