I recommend you fly in to the departure point a day or two before the scheduled date as you should not rely on airlines getting you there on time. It's a good idea to add a few days onto the end of the trip, since you might not get to that part of the world again.

A river cruise is very relaxing. Enjoy the lectures, shows, and the excursions are done with different levels of walking depending on the passenger's preference. Since so many of the historic towns have cobblestone streets, I would not wear sandals, but sensible comfortable shoes for walking.
