Diversification, AB 317 Highlight Council Meeting
Monday's City Council meeting will address two major issues in Malibu.

Monday's City Council meeting will bring to the forefront two critical issues in the Malibu community, as the council will consider whether to move forward with a proposed retail diversification ordinance, as well as discuss a position on Assembly Bill 317, which would alter rent control in mobile home parks.Â
Outgoing council member Pamela Conley Ulich brought forth the idea for a temporary ban of chain stores in Malibu at the March 12 City Council meeting, as the City Council has been examining a possible retail diversification ordinance for months. Â
There has been much debate regarding the council's impending decision in recent months, and with the recent addition of Sephora to Malibu Village, and rumors that other chain stores such as Chipotle are seeking to land in Malibu, the conversation within the city has revolved around maintaining a sense of individuality.Â

Current City Council candidates have shared their views on the diversification ordinance at recent candidates' forums, several of whom seem to be in favor of the ordinance.
Council candidates Skylar Peak and Hans Laetz have warned against allowing Malibu to resemble Rodeo Drive, and Hamish Patterson called the decision to implement the ordinance a "no-brainer."

Andy Lyon said that he would strive to work with Preserve Malibu and Missy Zeitsoff commented that the city needs a diversification ordinance, drafted by the Preserve Malibu movement.Â
Joan House called the ordinance "an intriguing idea," but said that it must be "examined by the entire community."
John Sibert, the lone incumbent in this year's race, said that he will not formulate an opinion on the matter "prior to a public hearing," which will take place Monday.
Also on Monday's agenda will be a discussion regarding AB 317, a bill that would alter rent control, causing some residents to face higher rents if it would become law. If passed, the bill would have a major impact on a significant number of Malibu residents, specifically in Paradise Cove Mobilehome Park.
