Drive-In Movie Night At Chili Cook Off Lot Planned For April 17
The MHS Parent Committee is planning a drive-in movie night to honor graduating seniors, and is asking the city for sponsorship.
MALIBU, CA — The Malibu High School Parent Committee is asking the Malibu City Council to consider sponsoring a senior drive-in movie night and waiving the associated fees. The Council will vote Monday whether to shift money in the approved 2020-21 budget to sponsor the event, which is estimated to cost a total of $1506.
In February, the Parent Committee requested a one-night drive-in movie event that would take place April 17 at the Ioki property, also known as the Chili Cook-Off Lot. On Oct. 30 and 31, the Malibu Film Society hosted a drive-in at the site where they showed “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Ghostbusters.” The city waived all funds for that event, and donations benefited the Film Society and the Malibu Foundation’s Woolsey Fire recovery fund. The April drive-in will celebrate Malibu High School seniors, whose senior year of high school has been significantly curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie that will be shown is not specified.
The committee is not charging admission, and is relying on donations from the community. It is asking that the city pay for the facility use fee, staffing fee, temporary use permit fee, and K-rails to secure the movie screen. Waivers would allow the committee to save the money towards other event expenses, like assistance from the Malibu Film Society, a film license, portable restrooms, a food truck, and parking control, and would also go towards other events for MHS seniors.

The Malibu Municipal Code allows up to six Temporary Use Permits per calendar year per parcel. If approved, this would be the first event at the Ioki property in 2021.
