Malibu Farmers Market Reopens Cafe, Offers Free Brunch Sunday

MALIBU, CA — Free crepes are a great way to start off a Sunday morning. Free crepes outside are even better.

After over a year of closure, the Malibu Farmers Market has reopened its outdoor cafe, and to celebrate, it’s offering free brunch to the first 50 customers on Sunday, April 11. In addition to French crepes, it’s offering farm fresh goodness like vegan mac ‘n’ cheese with caramelized onions, vegan duck, handmade pasta with handmade marinara, pesto, and alfredo sauce, smoothie bowls with chia seeds, and more.

To get a free food voucher, go to the purple booth at the Farmers Market at 23555 Civic Center Way in Malibu, and sign in at the purple booth.

Farmers markets weren’t allowed to serve hot, prepared foods until recently, and organizer Deb Bianco told Patch she’s reopening the cafe slowly. Six tables will be available, instead of the 25 pre-pandemic, and tables will be time limited. Stringent precautions are still in place. Vendors wear masks and gloves, and 30 handwashing stations are spread out around the Civic Center parking lot.

But as restrictions ease, the market is celebrating with free food and live music from alternative country rock band Tommy Drinkard & the Remedy and jazz trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

It’s been a difficult year for the market, as many people opted for food delivery by better known chains, and construction of the Malibu campus of Santa Monica Community College encroached onto their parking space. But Bianco says the market’s overcome hardships before.

“We’ve been through the fires, and the rains, and the mudslides, then the pandemic, and then in the midst of the pandemic, the most obscene winds, but we’re still standing,” she said.
