Residents Join Hands Across Lagoon Event

Saturday's event opposing the impending Malibu Lagoon project drew large crowds.

A significant number of Malibu residents came to support the Hands Across the Lagoon event held Saturday at Surfrider Beach, in hopes of drawing attention to a project that a large amount of residents ardently oppose.

The event was hosted by The Surfers Coaltion and several other local organizations, and the original plan was to create a human hand chain around the Lagoon. However, according to many in attendance, protesters were told to move by State Park officials, causing event supporters relocate to Surfrider Beach.

Regardless of the venue change, crowds of people stood on Pacific Coast Highway with signs expressing their opposition of the Lagoon project, asking passer-byers to, "Honk for the Lagoon."

"The massive turnout for the Hands Across the Lagoon/ Surfrider Beach event Saturday was Malibu activism at its best," said City Council candidate Missy Zeitsoff. "Malibu residents care what happens to the Lagoon and Beach, and all the wildlife at the Lagoon. We don't want "bully" dozers ruining our town's natural environment on June 1st."
