MALIBU, CA — A Riverside County man is in custody after allegedly harassing women at Zuma Beach on Sunday, while carrying a rifle and several hundred rounds of ammunition under his trench coat.

Kyle Kiddy, 34, was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of carrying concealed firearms. Kiddy is being held on $60,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

On Sunday, a Malibu resident at Zuma Beach said that a man in a heavy trench coat was harassing her on the beach by making lewd comments and trying to get her to come into his van. When deputies arrived, they saw the man sitting in a van parked on the street and went over to talk to him.

During their conversation, deputies noticed Kiddy was carrying a rifle that was partially concealed under his trench coat.

“Basically, he had a trench coat on, and he had a rifle with a strap over his shoulder underneath the trench coat,” Lost Hills Lt. Jim Braden told the Los Angeles Times. Concealing a weapon is a violation of California Penal Code section 25400, according to a statement from the department.

Deputies searched Kiddy, and found that he had three loaded pistols and a large supply of loaded ammunition. When deputies searched Kiddy’s van, they found more shotguns. Braden estimated that Kiddy had between 1,200 and 1,500 rounds of ammunition in the car and on his person.

Kiddy was arrested, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed multiple weapons charges against him, according to the LASD. Braden told the Malibu Times that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the FBI have been notified, though the LASD is leading the investigation.

The resident who called the police told the Malibu Times that the man was in his early 30s with dirty blond hair and sunglasses who was “walking kind of strange” with arms “straight out like he was trying to hold something in.”

“I assumed initially he was homeless and had layered all his clothing, because it was bulky under his trench coat,” she told the Malibu Times. “I didn’t know it was because he was carrying all these weapons.”

Braden told the Times that he does not know if Kiddy is unhoused or transient, but did not recognize his vehicle.

“She did a great thing by calling us,” Braden told the Los Angeles Times. “Who knows what it averted in Malibu, or where the guy would end up.”
