MALIBU, CA — A motorist was killed early Monday morning when his vehicle crashed off the side of a road and into a canyon in Malibu, the third of three deaths in a 24-hour period in the city.

The crash was reported at around 2:10 a.m. at the intersection of Kanan Dume and Latigo Canyon roads, the California Highway Patrol told City News Service.

Information is not yet available on the identity of the driver, who died at the scene. The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.

The crash came just hours after two men were fatally struck by two different vehicles crossing Pacific Coast Highway at 10:35 p.m. Sunday.

The winding canyon roads of Malibu have also been the site of many recent accidents. In late December, a car plunged about 200 feet off Kanan Dume Road, near the intersection with Zuma Edison Road, and a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter crew hoisted the injured driver to safety.

In January, a wintry mix of snow and hail caused two different vehicle rollovers, on Kanan Dume Road and Malibu Canyon Road, on the same day. One driver was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while another survived without injury.

In February, a car overturned and went 100 feet off the edge of Malibu Canyon Road, about two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway. The woman driving the car was ejected, and a Search and Rescue Team hoisted the woman out of the area using a fire department helicopter.

Police advise drivers to use caution on these high, winding roads, and avoid driving at night or in inclement weather.
