Meet an “Amazing” Who Traded Retirement for Serving the Needy

Father Luis Mesa, 71, walked away from a cozy retirement to help others.

In 2011, Father Luis Mesa, 71, walked away from a life of post-retirement leisure as a businessman with homes in several countries, to help found, with the help of Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, a religious community called the Messengers of Peace.

Its first purpose was to establish a residence for girls whose families are unable to care for their daughters. It's overseen by a community of religious women from Peru. In addition to their prayers for peace, Father Mesa and the priests and monks of the monastery offer help and support to the poor and needy of their community, as well as a contemplative environment open to all.
