New '21 Miles of Scenic Beauty' Malibu Gateway Signs To Be Unveiled Monday

The iconic original signs, which have become world-famous spots for photos, were installed when unincorporated Malibu was 27 miles long.

MALIBU, CA – The Mayor and City Council of Malibu invite the public and media to attend a ceremony to unveil and dedicate the new Malibu gateway signs at 11 a.m. Monday, April 24 at PCH and Lunita Rd. (31200 Pacific Coast Highway, ½ mile west of Trancas Canyon Rd.). Parking is available on site on the oceanside of PCH with traffic control.

“For many years, one of the most famous images of Malibu, recognized around the world and beloved by both residents and visitors, has been the gateway sign, but it listed the incorrect length of the City,” said Mayor Lou La Monte. “Now, when we enter Malibu, our new signs will welcome us to the 21 miles of scenic beauty that we call home.”

After delivering his State of the City Address on Friday, March 31 at Malibu City Hall, Mayor La Monte unveiled the new Malibu gateway signs. There will be four new signs installed proclaiming "21 miles of scenic beauty." Two will replace the beloved, but aging and inaccurate original signs at the City's eastern and western borders on PCH, and two new signs will welcome those entering the City from Malibu Canyon Rd. and Kanan Dume Rd.

The environmentally responsible and durable signs are made from recycled water bottles and are exact replicas of the original signs except for the corrected length of the city.

The iconic original signs, which have become world-famous spots for photos for decades, were installed in the 1960s by realtors when unincorporated Malibu was 27 miles long. When the city was incorporated in 1991, the length was set at 21 miles, but the signs remained.
