RIP to a great Friend

Thanks Scout...it was a privilege to know and care for you.

I know that it is a little odd to think that anyone is going to care that my family lost a beloved pet. I am not writing for sympathy, more to honor the life of a great friend and to, perhaps, give support to others who have lost their companions.

I am not a pet owner type. I typically have no use for pets, though we have had birds, guinea pigs, and now we have a hamster (that I play with). I like dogs and cats but my lifestyle isn’t conducive to the maintenance of a pet. Thank goodness my wife is such a good caregiver. I do know that I never walked by that dog without talking to her or hugging her or scratching her or playing with her. She was a great friend and easily the sweetest animal I have ever known. Everyone loved her, even people who don’t generally care for dogs. I am overwhelmed.

I feel so terribly sad for this loss, for my children, but mostly for my wife. She was the one who fed her everyday and took care of the maintenance issues. She did all the ”dirty” work and we just got to play with her. She was there with her when she was in a quiet house alone, a constant companion.

It was so unavoidable...but that is often the case. I see today that a young girl was killed by a car. The loss of my dog puts ”loss” in perspective. I guess it helps now and then to know what people are going through....even though the loss of a daughter or a sister is infinitely more devastating. There are no words for that kind of sorrow, still, the human connection is made. We are all in this together.

Thanks Scout....it was a privilege to know and care for you. You brought us joy!
