MALIBU, CA — A stretch of Civic Center Way near Pepperdine University in Malibu was reopened Saturday afternoon as workers repaired damage to the road caused by an aging storm drain, according to Malibu Emergency Services.

"It was a huge sinkhole," according to Sgt. James Braden of the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

The road damage was reported about 4:40 p.m. Friday on Civic Center Way near Vista Pacifica, according to the sheriff's station and Malibu Emergency Services.

Civic Center Way between Winter Canyon Road and Webb Way was shut to traffic as crews from the county's Department of Public Works responded to the scene and began using a tractor to "dig out" the damaged area of the road, said Braden.

Residents of the condominiums on Civic Center Way were allowed access around the repair work area, according to city officials.
