Religious indifference means that people feel that they can gain nothing from religious faith.  The teachings of the Baal Shemtov are instructive, because his wisdom explains how to transcend religious indifference. Let me paraphrase.
1. The Simpleton
Why does the greatest of the great need to learn from the simplest of the simple? In the simple, one sees the essence of sincerity.

3. Faults
How does one correct character traits? One must transform the faults into strengths.
4. The Will
Where is the place of one's will? It is where he is.
5. Bringing CloserÂ
How does one steer a coarse and boorish individual to the correct path? One shows him love—until he recognizes his own faults.
Today, we are celebrating the third birthday of our son Yisroel Eddie. His first name was given after the name of the Reb Yisroel the Baal Shemtov.  Â
Reb Yisroel was born in 1698 to saintly parents who raised him in Okup, a small village at the ever-changing Russian/Polish border. Losing both parents and orphaned at age 5, he would always recall the last words his father said to him, "Yisroel my son, you have a very holy soul, have no fear of anyone or anything. Fear only G-d."
Reb Yisroel would become known as the Baal Shem Tov ("master of a good name") He revealed a spiritual path of living sourced in ancient and mystical Jewish teachings, his words continue to  inspire generations including every race, color and creed.
As we celebrate this day of joy, with a traditional ceremony for our son Yisroel Eddie’s first haircut, I am reminded of the great love the Baal Shemtov had for everyone. His teachings are his legacy. Â
There have been several readers that have requested to join a study group on the teachings of the Baal Shemtov. I am considering a four week series on the life and teachings of the Baal Shemtov. If you would like to find out more or join , please email me rabbi@jewishmalibu.com.
