Tunnel Project to Close Malibu Canyon Road Over Seven Months
The closures will be overnight, and traffic will be diverted to Kanan Dume Road.

Construction is set to begin as early as January on a seven month tunnel rehabilitation project on Malibu Canyon Road, which will be closed at night during the work.
Steel plates will be switched out within the Malibu Canyon Tunnel as well as other rehabilitation work, according to Mike Caspar of Los Angeles County Public Works.
The work is preventative to avoid any debris from ever falling.
"We want to make sure we don't ever have to address that problem," Caspar said. "We want to take care of that now."
During the project, Malibu Canyon Road will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week, according to L.A. County Public Works.
"We understand it is a big disruption," Caspar said. "We want to get in and out of there as quickly as possible."
Once that work is complete, work will begin on the first tunnel, closest to Malibu, on Kanan Dume Road, Caspar said. Repair work on both bridges will take about a year, he said.Â
"Kanan will remain open during that project," Caspar said. "That will remain open, although it will be down to one lane in each direction."
Electronic signage will be posted on both roadways during the roadwork. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through at any time.
The total cost of both projects is $5 million and will be paid for by Los Angeles County funds and State 1B Transportation Bond funds. Â
