Roundhouse Aquarium Receives $10,000 Donation

The Manhattan Beach Roundhouse Aquarium is pleased to announce that it received a $10,000 donation from the Sustainable Seafood dinner held May 24 on the beach, just north of the Manhattan Beach pier. John Roberts, the aquarium board president, spoke at the event, which was produced by Outstanding in the Field in conjunction with the Los Angeles Times and LA Food Bowl celebration of food.

The sponsoring group wanted to donate to a local non-profit group that was in line with its philosophy of promoting food that comes from sources that will not be depleted. Kelly Stroman, executive director of the Downtown Business and Professional Association (DBPA), suggested the sponsors contact the aquarium, and that resulted in the $10,000 donation.

The DBPA is an organization representing the 300+ businesses located in the downtown business area of Manhattan Beach. It meets regularly to discuss common challenges, successes, and opportunities that will enhance the Downtown Manhattan Beach experience for the businesses, residents, and visitors. The dinner on the beach was an example of a collaboration with an outside group that focused on local topics while showcasing the culinary talent in downtown.

The Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center, located at the end of the Manhattan Beach pier, provides state-sanctioned classes for school children who are bused to the facility. These classes teach about the ocean, its inhabitants, and its environment. The aquarium is also open to the public on weekends and weekday afternoons and features tanks that highlight the sea animals of the Los Angeles South Bay area.
