El Segundo Lifeguard Tower Will Turn Pink This October

EL SEGUNDO, CA — An El Segundo lifeguard tower will change from iconic blue to pink this October to raise awareness about breast cancer, a county official announced Tuesday.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said the city of El Segundo asked for the temporary color change in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which some advocates also call Pinktober.

"The pink tower will be more than Instagram-able, it will be an opportunity to raise awareness about early warning signs of breast cancer as well as raise up the stories of people and families who have been affected by this terrible disease," Hahn said.

Community members will help paint the tower pink, and then at the end of October, the Department of Beaches and Harbors will repaint it blue.

"The city of El Segundo is thrilled that Supervisor Hahn consistently demonstrates support of her constituents," El Segundo Mayor Drew Boyles said. "I commend realtor and long-standing philanthropist Alex Abad for having the vision and tenacity to bring this project to fruition."
