Patch: What attracted you to education, and how did you get started?
Mekhitarian: I was inspired by the great mentors who helped me realize my own potential for growth.
Patch: What is your teaching style or philosophy?
Mekhitarian: My teaching philosophy is student centered, relationship focused and grounded in the belief that every student has an immense capacity to learn and grow and just hasn’t figured out how to tap into it yet.
Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced working in the education system?
Mekhitarian: I think the biggest challenge for most teachers is not having the time or the capacity to reach every child.
Patch: What’s your favorite thing about being an educator? About your school?
Mekhitarian: My favorite thing about being an educator is empowering students to be more than they thought they could be; more independent, more passionate, more critical and more compassionate. My favorite thing about my organization is that it allows me to connect with every student one to one and partner with them in their education and growth as a person. Additionally, I love that Fusion has open enrollment allowing us to welcome students anytime for full time or part time enrollment.
Patch: Why should parents send their children to your school?
Mekhitarian: Parents should send their students to Fusion Academy because we place great importance on both education and social emotional learning. We have created a loving, compassionate and supportive environment where students can immediately leverage their unique strengths and feel successful while working on developing their skills and confidence.
Patch: What does a typical day in one of your classrooms look like?
Mekhitarian: We value flexibility and individuality in both programming and scheduling so no two schedules look like. Having said that, every student's day consists of both one-to-one instruction and time set aside in what is known as the “homework café” to work through assignments and ensure that all homework gets done on campus.
Patch: What kind of extracurricular activities does your school provide?
Mekhitarian: Our school program has a heavy focus on the arts and every one of our students is either taking a visual art or taking one of many music classes that we offer in our two recording studios. In addition, we offer community service opportunities, field trips as well as numerous on campus clubs.
