Grades 3-5 To Return To Campus March 1 In Manhattan Beach Unified
The Manhattan Beach Unified School District continues with its plan for reopening on-campus learning set last July. School board to discuss.
MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Students attending school in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District grades 3-5 will be able to return to on-campus learning starting March 1, according to the school district board meeting agenda. The board meets this Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.
In addition to discussion on reopening campuses for grades 3-5, the board will also discuss adding up to seven sections of high need hybrid in-person learning [four at Mira Costa High School and 3 at Manhattan Beach Middle School]. The board will also have the option to add more in the future, according to the online agenda.
MBUSD staff is also recommending that the board vote to determine the next steps for starting 6th grade humanities, with one cohort attending for three hours a day, two days a week, for three weeks, then the next cohort doing the same.

The meeting will also include staff updates on:
- Implementation of new Operational Safety Protocols
- Distance Learning Updates
- Professional Development on effective distance learning strategies
- Progress of athletic trainings as allowed by the state's protocols for youth sports
- Developments in the MBUSD High Needs Hybrid, including new support classes offered at MBMS and MCHS
- Updates from the TK-2 Hybrid Program
- Updates from the State and Los Angeles County
- Filtration systems in classrooms
- Options for 6th grade, including Humanities.
Thus far, MBUSD has had four "critical start dates"

- September 16: Preschool Aged Childcare and EDP Programs Began
- September 29: MCHS Youth Sports Training Program Began
- October 12: MBUSD High Need Hybrid Began
- December 8: MBUSD TK-2 Hybrid Began
MBUSD has been following the reopening plan its school board approved at its July 29, 2020 meeting, when the board approved MBUSD schools reopening with the following stages:
- Phase 1: Distance Learning
- Phase 2: High Need Hybrid
- Phase 3: Elementary Hybrid
- Phase 4: Secondary Hybrid
- Phase 5: Full return to school with a distance learning option for students
