Manhattan Beach Lights Up To Celebrate Women Winning The Vote

Purple and gold lights will be seen around Manhattan Beach through Nov. 3rd as locals celebrate the Centennial of Women Winning the Vote.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach will light up with purple and gold [the official women's suffrage colors] every night until Election Day November 3rd in celebration of the Centennial of Women Winning the Vote. The City of Manhattan Beach joined the official nationwide commemoration marking the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women's constitutional right to vote. Nationwide, landmarks and buildings lit up in purple and gold on August 26 and Manhattan Beach City Hall was one of them.

The city hall building on Highland Avenue neat to the public library in downtown Manhattan Beach was bathed in purple and gold floodlights last night. Several of the women who worked on organizing Manhattan Beach's effort showed up wearing white to take commemorative photos.

Manhattan Beach businesses participating in the commemoration included {pages} a bookstore, Gum Tree, Beach Cities Optometry, Blue Diamond Jewelry, Love & Salt, and Finder's Keepers Consignment, all in downtown Manhattan Beach. The city hung banners downtown announcing the celebration.

Manhattan Beach City Council member Nancy Hersman and residents Amy Howorth, Jan Fenton, Diane Wallace, Kim Edwards, Jill Lamkin, Jane Guthrie, Jeanne Fratello, and Kim Edwards and City Clerk Liza Tamura and Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Kelly Strom worked on the effort.

The Federal Forward Into Light Campaign is named in honor of the historic suffrage slogan, "Forward through the Darkness, Forward into Light." Other cities that chose to participate included Cerritos, Long Beach, La Canada Flintridge, Stockton and Los Angeles.
