MANHATTAN BEACH, CA —LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn will be making a major announcement at a press conference on Friday morning regarding Bruce's Beach. She will be joined by CA State Senator Bruce Bradford and a number of prominent local officials.

In 1924, the City used eminent domain to force Willa and Charles Bruce off the land they lived on, where they ran a resort for Black families. The property, which is located on Highland Avenue at 27th Street, is currently owned by Los Angeles County and houses the county's lifeguard headquarters and training center.

On Tuesday night, the Manhattan Beach City Council stopped short of issuing an apology by voting for a statement of "acknowledgment and condemnation" regarding the Bruce's Beach situation.

It was unclear exactly what Hahn plans to announce at the news conference, which will also include Supervisor Holly Mitchell and Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance. A representative of the Bruce family is also expected to attend.

In a press release announcing the event, her office says, Hahn "has recognized the opportunity the County has to begin to right the wrongs of the past and bring some justice to Charles and Willa Bruce's descendants. She has been meeting with the family and has stated her intention to work to return the land to them. Friday's announcement will be a step toward achieving that goal."
