UPDATED at 10 p.m.
A man with a mental illness barricaded himself in the Marina Peninsula on Tuesday night and was later taken away for a medical evaluation in an incident that drew a police helicopter and about a dozen officers.Â
Officers who had been dispatched to the area on a separate matter were flagged down by citizens about 7:50 p.m. and told of a man on a balcony near Fleet Street and Speedway who was acting erratically and throwing items onto the road, said Lt. Paola Kreefft of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man was holding a small pocket knife when officers approached his unit and he closed the door on them, Kreefft said. Police soon were told the man had mental health issues, Kreefft said.
"A sergeant established a rapport with him and talked him down," she said.

The man voluntarily left and was taken by paramedics about 9:25 p.m. to a nearby hospital for an evaluation. No charges were pending.
Neither the man nor any officers were injured.
Several apples and other fruits along with some papers and small debris were strewn along Speedway and neighbors worked together to clean it up.
