Marina del Rey Man May Have Taken Video of own Shark Attack

Man is in stable condition at Maui hospital.

Police have recovered a video camera that was attached to the surfboard of a 58-year-old Marina del Rey who suffered deep lacerations to his leg after a shark attacked him on Tuesday off the west coast of Maui, according to Maui News.

The man declined to be interviewed, but as of Wednesday, he is in stable condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The Marina del Rey man reported that he was sitting on his surfboard about 100 yards off the shore of Maui Kai condominium at about 8:30 a.m. when the shark attacked him and he was able to paddle back to shore on his own. The man, who has not yet been identified, owns a condo at Maui Kai.

The video is being held as evidence as police investigate the attack, according to Maui News.

"It will be really interesting to see if the camera was running or if it captured any footage of the event," Carl Meyer, an assistant researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, told Maui News. "Typically, we have very minimal information when someone gets bitten by a shark," she said, which makes identifying a species "pretty tough."

After the attack, surfers were evacuated from the water and officials closed the beach for a mile in both directions.

The shark left a six-inch bite outline on the man’s thigh, and he said said the shark’s head was the size of a basketball.
