Sprouts:

Surfing Cowboys, the beach culture store that moved after 17 years on Abbot Kinney Boulevard because of increased rent, opened in Mar Vista on Monday. Thanks to the bigger space, Surfing Cowboys can now house more furniture and larger items compared to the old location, owner Wayne Gunther said.

The new Palihouse Santa Monica hotel has big plans in store, but one specifically is upsetting nearby residents. Stylish hotelier Avi Brosh is putting his touch on Santa Monica's historic Embassy Hotel Apartments, a small Spanish-style hotel two blocks north of the Third Street Promenade, turning its rooms into "beach-inspired pied-à-terres." Part of Brosh's vision is to open a lounge in the hotel's lobby that serves coffee to guests during the day and cocktails and snacks at night. But his dream is one woman's nightmare.

The focus of 1519—a Japanese-style steakhouse poised to replace a controversial bar on Wilshire Boulevard—will be on the food, not the drinks, its chef says in planning documents filed with the city. The site was formerly home to The Parlor, a nighttime hot spot that upset neighbors who said it attracted rowdy crowds. Before it shut down in the fall of 2010 and relocated to West Hollywood, residents reportedly tried to limit its hours and quiet its customers.

Traditional Californian cuisine fans of Taste at the Palisades will get a Mexican twist starting Thursdays from a West Hollywood-based restaurant. Tortilla Republic will begin hosting pop-up menu at Taste, located at 538 Palisades Dr., Pacific Palisades. It starts Thursday, April 4, and every Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Revolutionary fitness methods and red carpet-worthy hairstyles are transforming a street corner in Brentwood near the already-popular athletic apparel branch of Lululemon. Thursday's soft opening of world-renowned fitness trainer Tracy Anderson's studio at 11918 San Vicente Blvd. is phase one of a business venture with actress/author Gwyneth Paltrow and famed hairstylist David Babaii for a blow dry bar within, reports Racked.
